The proof of the pudding... March 18, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My criteria for a good 'family' cook book is whether the recipes satisfy the fussiest of eaters at your dinner table. I've tried and cooked a number of recipes from this book and they not only work but also both my children enjoy and more to the point finish the final result. You need good, simple nourishing recipes that are not over rich and this book ticks all those boxes. There is a huge and confusing array of recipe books out there catering for this market and whilst Tana Ramsey benefits from having a famous husband as well as a TV series, her recipes are simple, attractive and more to the point taste good. I recommend this book.
all your favourite recipes ruined. January 23, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book has proved useless in my kitchen. May well be of some use if you don't know how to cook or need a shove to start feeding your children proper food. But if like me you already cook full meals and lunch from scratch this book does little more than add a few more recipes to the shelf. Those that I have so far tried have failed to thrill me. And others are just things that we don't really like.
Good points? That I already mentioned-good for people without prior family cooking knowledge. Good layout-clear instructions good photography.
To be honest if you need a basic from scratch comprehensive guide to family cooking I would highly reccomend the river cottage family cookbook which will serve you well even when you know exactly what you are at in the kitchen.
An Inspirational book rather than a recipe book January 13, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was seriously disappointed with this book based upon a number of customer reviews I saw on the Amazon site. I thought it was going to be a really good family cookbook for a working mother. However, although I found this book inspirational, I no longer use the recipes in this book. I have wasted a lot of time and ingredients on a large number of the recipes in this book due to inaccuracies and a lack of information. I'm afraid I'm not a natural cook, I follow the recipe to the letter and more often than not her recipes need a degree of guess work or reliance on cooking knowledge. If you are going to follow these recipes I advise you not to have a hungry family waiting in the background until you've had a practice run!!! It's a book that now gathers dust on my shelf.
Salt of the earth stuff December 18, 2007 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Some recipe books are pretentious with an air of superiority wafting from each page as you turn them to see another fancy dish requiring a re-mortgage to fund the ingredients. This is a breath of fresh air.
The book mostly consists of wholesome family food - the sort of food which leaves you pleasantly full and saying "I'll definitely have that again...". Flicking through the book will reveal lots of familiar foods; homemade jammy dodgers, sausage rolls, muesli, burgers, baked beans - home made versions of food we love already. The book encourages you to make things you'd normally buy, and then maybe try some of the more advanced recipes. I say advanced, but the beauty of this book is that the recipes are all relatively simple - tailored (as the title suggests) for a busy family.
In the last two days my wife (who loves cooking) has used three of the recipes in here and has been delighted with the results. This isn't a cookery book which will sit on a shelf only to be looked at every few months - it's one which can be used throughout the week. It doesn't take itself too seriously either, with a recipe for playdough and relaxed photos of Tana and kids in the kitchen you can't helped but feel relaxed and confident to use any of the ideas in this book.
A great family cookbook November 23, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I really love this book. Tana Ramsay knows what family cooking is about - simple, healthy, hearty food which husband and kids will love to eat! The recipes are straightforward and unfussy, with an emphasis on things you can prepare in advance and put in the fridge (essential for busy mothers!) There are also loads of tips for making family meals something to love and remember - I love her idea, for example, of having a weekend 'taste a bit of everything' lunch, where you put lots of different foods out for your kids to sample and savour new tastes and ideas. Quite the best family cookbook since Delia Smith's classic 'Complete Cookery Course'!
