Relationships by Numbers August 26, 2008 A very satisfying read. It's a fresh angle on the relationship novel and all the more rewarding for that. The reader is taken into the head of Grace, which proves to be a fascinating and engaging place to be.
We move with her through the months of her relationship with Seamus, empathising more with her experience of therapy than the emotions of the romance. That is not to say that we aren't happy when the emotions develop in the way we would best like.
It becomes quite an agonising experience to feel how the drugs affect her sensitivity and a relief when she decides to stop taking them and achieve her own style of therapy. The gradual decrease of counting and calculation in the narrative is nicely judged to enable the reader to feel her healing.
The book does encourage an awareness of different perceptions that might be harder to achieve in real life, but it is, after all, a story and so brings that familiar warm glow of romance achieved.
Seamus is so well-drawn as a nice guy that the urge to shout at him to see what he's doing to Grace during the therapy section is enormous; an excellent ploy by the author. Larry the niece gives an angle of perception on her aunt that the reader can identify with as preferable.
All this covers a degree of sentiment which is more obvious once the book is read and thought over. That makes it even more satisfying.
mmmm undecided!!! August 14, 2008 I REALLY REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS BOOK AS THE IDEA AND CONCEPT IS VERY ORIGINAL AND HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING LIKE IT, BUT AFTER REALLY TRYING I AM LEFT FEELING BIT INDIFFERENT TOWARDS IT! GRACE IS EASY TO WARM TO AND SEAMUS IS VERY LOVEABLE BUT FEELS LIKE IT DONT EVER REALLY GET GOING! WAS ALL A BIT SLOW AND SKIPPED PAGES AT TIMES TO FIND MORE INTRESTING PARTS!! WORTH READING JUST FOR THE FUNNY ONE LINERS BUT WOULDNT BE TOP OF MY RECOMMENDATIONS SORRY!!
ok holiday reading August 13, 2008 This story is interesting but shallow and the story does not stay long with you. A good, quick read for a holiday, but sadly, not really one to recommend.
Disappointing read August 13, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was disappointed with this book after a strong recommendation to read it. The concept of the book was good and the character of Grace very believable but the plotline seemed inevitable and the characters around Grace all to forgettable.
Food for thought July 25, 2008 This was the latest book for my book club and I think it was a good choice. Grace's story of her need to count everything, from the number of steps to the cafe to the poppy seeds on her cake, is one many of us could relate to. Who doesn't have some wierd quirk in their personality? What is normal and who are we to judge? The book gave our group lots to talk about. Grace is a witty narrator and, at first, her counting and strict routine almost make sense. It's only when we begin to see how her obsession interferes with her life that the reader sees how destructive it is. But there are indications that Grace can change and adapt. Having a slghtly obsessive personality myself, I found I could really relate to her! Grace eventually enters therpy to help with her condition and it's a testament to Jordan's fine storytelling that the language and pace of the book change to reflect how Grace's medication affects her personality. The reader really gets a feel for how different Grace is without her counting and how the counting is an essential part of who she is. Addition is an easy read, but gives you plenty to think about. The charaters are believable and entertaining. It's a lovely read for anyone who enjoys a happy ending, but also wants a book with a little substance.
