General, could have done with more specific "how to" June 16, 2010 S. Mark St.Ear (London, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although this is one of the more positive books on meditation I've read, and Matthieu Ricard always writes positively and lucidly, this book does not have as many "how to" instructions as I would have hoped. It is almost just a shortened version of his book on happiness, with a few ideas for meditation thrown in for good measure.
There is food for thought here, but for someone trying to begin meditation by themselves it is a bit sparse.
An inspiring book April 7, 2010 Eliza Jane 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is an inspiring book, written clearly with great love and sensitivity. It needs to be read slowly, savoured, experienced and kept by the bedside. It is the most beautiful and brilliant book on the topic of meditation that I have ever read.
Quite a difficult read - not all that practical March 20, 2010 FelixP (Westminster, London, UK) 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
I've struggled with this book and not found it particularly easy to read - the author seems to go off on tangents quite a lot.
The book also seems slanted to some or other sects method of meditation which, although undoubtedly well intentioned, at times may better be described as visualisation.
The book contains just two illustrations - of people sitting in full and half lotus positions which is way beyond my flexibility. I would have preferred more options.
I was hoping to find something containing a simple philosophy, clear description of benefits and easy to follow practical directions for a general audience. Sadly , this book disappointed me.
Excellent book March 9, 2010 Isl Green (Scotland) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
As a long time meditator I bough this book because I heard it reviewed on the radio and like Ricard's clear style of writing. I was not disappointed, in fact I bought two more copies to give away. It is one of the most useful books I have come across to give to non-Buddhist friends who are a bit interested but also a bit , or a lot, sceptical about meditation.
Excellent book March 6, 2010 S. J. Marr 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've read a lot of books on meditation, this one answers all those nagging questions brilliantly.
