5 out of 5 stars A really useful and accurate book   June 28, 2007

I already live in France but I still read books which describe the experience. This is one of the best I have read. It is accurate on most counts but more importantly it is written by someone who actually has experience of living in this country ( whereas many relocation books are written to a formula by authors who have very little direct knowledge of the country about which they are writing!). It is not meant to be an encyclopaedia but the information it provides is very valuable and I would have loved to read it before I moved here. It is also so readable and the valuable information is there alongside the personal experiences of the author some of which are very humorous. The translation of key questions you might want to ask is useful since many Brits do have a basic schoolboy knowledge of French but would not know how to ask these questions. If I have a criticism it would be that there is no detailed index and no section which provides sources of further information but this is a very small criticism.

If you are considering the purchase of a book about buying in France this book should be considered.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful guide   May 7, 2007

I bought this book when it came out because we were going house hunting in Normandy. I'm very glad I did: it proved both readable and very useful. Although some of the questions may seem fairly obvious, we'd actually forgotten to ask them. Others we'd never even thought to ask. So the book was a good discipline and could even have stopped us doing something we might have lived to regret. I can highly recommend it because it's easy to read, simple to use and practical - and you can't say fairer than that about this kind of book.

5 out of 5 stars Just about everything you need to know   April 24, 2007

If you're thinking about buying property in France and want to read something on the subject that's both informative and entertaining then this is the book for you. It's written from personal experience and the author has certainly amassed plenty of cracking anecdotes along the way - plenty of amusement to be had. The book takes you step by step through the process in a way that's both clear and logical and easy to follow. It's not totally comprehensive and doesn't try to be but it's a good source of reference and value for money too.

4 out of 5 stars essential questions to ask when buying a house in france   April 7, 2007

There are so many points to think about in this book - things I had never considered before - but it works. I now have my own property in Provence. Don't be put off buying a house by the endless questions you need to ask. It is quite straightforward in the end.
