unreadable December 29, 2008 Just an antidote to the other reviews, reading which had prompted me to fork out a lot of money for a disappointment-and-a-half. Think twice! The book looks professionally produced, but his spelling, grammer and general presentation of ideas are so poor - almost childlike - I couldn't carry on! The quality of the author's ideas? He'd have us believe that music as authentic one-to-one communion between composer and listener begins historically with Ludwig van B. I rest my case with this verbatim lift from his chapter, 'Music - an extremely short introduction': "Music can also trigger sad or happy memories...a good morning can turn into an awful afternoon if at midday one hears Albinoni's Adagio for Strings and Organ in G major (which goes to show that even purely instrumental music moves us)." [No irony - author's brackets]
Mixing Audio August 11, 2008 I've just purchased this on the strength of the reviews above. I'm glad I was forewarned about the grammatical errors - I'm surprised it went to the presses in this state. The guy may not know how to write, though, but I reckon he knows how to mix. So far I'm finding it interesting and informative reading.
BUY IT! July 18, 2008 Finally a very good book on this underground subject. Well written (despite a huge number of errors, maybe it was not proofread very well). Chapters on compressors and dynamics are enough to justify the purchase. Audio examples are useful and well recorded.
In my opinion, the finest book on mixing that there is July 10, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As a record producer and University Lecturer on Music Technology and Production, I have read most of the limited supply of books that there is out there are on the art of mixing. Although there are a seemingly endless supply of books that cover the engineering side of things (microphones, placement, technique etc.) very few engage with the subject of mixing which is clearly a highly subjective and challenging concept to cover. As such, most of the ones that I have read leave alot to be desired. What a delight it was then to start reading Roey Izhaki's 'Mixing Audio'. Very well written and highly engaging right from the first chapter, it is clear just how much time has gone into this publication and I was delighted by just how readable it is. Excellent sections on the process of mixing, monitoring, software mixers, plug-ins, equalisation, gates, compression, limiting, reverbs, distortion etc. etc. are complimented by just the right amount of technical detail and demonstrated throughout on the accompanying CD. More importantly though, rather than just discussing these tools, full and comprehensive advice on how to properly utilise them is provided and backed up with audio examples. For anyone wanting to invest in a book on this subject matter, then I really can't recommend this book highly enough. Simply superb.
Invaluable .... February 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have found this book to be an invaluable teaching source for BTEC and A-Level music technology. I constantly find myself drawing on this book for references and have it as a recommended text.
Details of the tools used in the mix process are discussed in great detail and demonstrated effectively on numerous musical examples on the DVD.
I would highly recommend this book to the Music Technology student.
