Art or Money? October 15, 2008 It is inconceivable that Mr Rankin is short of cash and just like the protagonist of the book that makes what follows incomprehensible. The plot is so full of gaps and holes that the only enjoyment is watching the authorial equivalent of my 6-year old saying "I didn't drop the cake". I want my money back, and some way of recovering the couple of hours I spent reading this book.
What a Disappointment! October 14, 2008 What a disappointment this latest offering from Mr.Rankin is. The characters are not credible, believable or likable - there is not one I would like to see in a future novel. The plot is poor, predictable, unimaginative and unoriginal. I have abandoned similar novels from lesser writers. It was a real struggle to get to the end of this book and the only reason I persevered with this one was because it was by Ian Rankin. If you can borrow Doors Open from the library then give it a go, but it's not worth shelling out good money for a new copy.
Low Rankin October 13, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The best way I can describe reading this book after Rebus is it's like watching Bonekickers after Life on Mars. I know Ian Rankin can write well without Rebus - I first read his watchman stuff - but this has the feel of meeting deadlines and fulfilling contractual obligations. The characters are cardboard, no one to like or care about, the plot is thin. I think this is probably the first time I have needed more than one sitting to read any of his books - I really struggled to finish it and I don't think it was worth it. From anyone else I would have given this two stars - so this may be really unfair - but the disappointment is all the more. Let's hope this is a blip, back to form next time, and that this isn't the start of a series.

This book was a tremendous disappointment and a crashing bore. I managed to read a third way through, then, thoroughly exasperated, I turned to the last chapter and epilogue, and found it turned out exactly as I thought it would. I am a great fan of Ian Rankin and crime novels in general but this simplistic, obvious storyline is just a big yawn.
Mega dissapointment October 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read all Rankin`s previous works - also the non-Rebus titles but I have never been bored. That is until this one......
In short it took me 2 weeks to accomplish the reading and all the time I felt like putting it away, but hey, one owe Rankin to read it to the end. And I did. I`m sure the next one will be better, indeed couldn`t be much worse.
