I received this book with high hopes, but was immediately disappointed with the quality of the diagrams. Accurate, undoubtedly, but many as so small and complex as to be useless, and almost all are 2D, black and white diagrams. Often alternate angles which would hasten the understanding are left out, and 3D or color diagrams are entirely missing. Once in a while you may encounter a fairly thoughtless exploded diagram, but usually on poorly selected mechanisms, rather than the complex ones that require further illustration.
All in all this book is certainly full of lots of good mechanisms, but they're very poorly illustrated by todays standards - In 1951 this would have been worth the money, but in 2007 I'd expect a bit more effort to convey information in a more easily understood manner - color, 3D renderings, more drawings, cutaways and explosions, rather than a collection of small engineers drawings.
Design cook book for mechanical engineers April 18, 2001 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
It must be quite hard , even for mechanical engineers, to design some mechanical devices that work exactly what we want. This book contains plenty of designs and drawings which can be implemented immediately. For example, tripping or stop mechanisms, reversing mechanisms, speed-changing mechanisms, etc. I found this book saves me a lot of time and gives me briliant idea in machine design.
