5 out of 5 stars Important book   August 28, 2006

This is just so common it is almost frightening to read. I think the obsession with sexual incest is a complete misunderstanding of the "enmeshment" of co-dependent relationships. Emotional incest, where the dependent person is supplying the emotional needs of the "carer", is extremely damaging. This "love" is often rationalised by the "nurturing" obession, and the "modern ideal" that your parents should be "best friends". ANY parent that is your "best friend" means that you are satisfying their emotional needs, and are not interested in your personal growth.

A powerful book.

5 out of 5 stars Explains 'family' as Noam Chomsky explains US foreign policy   May 6, 1999

Understand everybody - read this! Don't be put off by the scary title - it's not about sex. 'Normal' people will benefit from understanding the people around them better. For those with stressful family relationships this is a must read. As a doctor I find a grasp of these concepts useful in every day practise - and I am a surgeon, not a psychiatrist.
