Susannah of the Mounties August 25, 2008 This is a superb children's book aimed at readers from 8 to 12 years. It was first published in the 1930's, I read an original copy in the 70s, it was my mother's book - she had read it as a child and so enjoyed it she kept it. I so enjoyed the story I too kept the book. It is now some 60 years old, very dog eared but well loved. My 10 year old daughter has just read it and she too has loved the story. I have since discovered that there were three sequels; Susannah of the Yukon, Susannah at Boarding School and Susannah Rides Again, but unfortunately all four stories are now out of print. Such a shame as I am sure most girls of 8 - 12 years would thorougherly enjoy this book.
The story is based in Canada in the late 19th Century. It is about Susannah, a nine year old girl who is sent by her parents to spend six months with her uncle who is a 'Mountie' in the Canadian Mounted Police force, whilst they travel to India. The story tells of her adventures during her stay, she learns to ride a Prairie pony she calls Beppo and becomes well loved by the Mounties themselves and also the local Indian tribe, in particular one young indian brave called Little Chief.
