Inter-species rivalry on the mean streets of Ankh-Morpork December 8, 2008 The one where Commander Sam Vimes and the Ankh-Morpork City Watch (first seen in 'Guards ! Guards !', and in this book acquiring its first vampire officer) have to solve a murder to prevent a troll-dwarf war. Slow-burning detective story in a noticeably `darker' Discworld, also featuring the mysterious Koom Valley Codex (though no Dan Brown...). Includes the first known reading of `Where's My Cow ?' to Young Sam, preceded by the Commander's frantic chase across the city to ensure he is home to read to the toddler at 6 o'clock sharp.
Thud October 23, 2008 This is the kind of book that Pratchett often writes that can be viewed in several different ways. It is different to many of his previous books in that it contains less obvious humour and concentrates more on satire and plotline, as well as characters. I know where people are coming from when they criticise Pratchett for his lack of humour in the book, but in my opinion, this is one of the best in the whole series, certainly of the Vimes books. It was one of the first ones that I read, and will always be among my favourites. Definitely worth a read. Thanks!
My Favorite! September 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know there are plenty of reviews on this book so theres no real need for me to write this one... But I just wanted to have my say!
This is probably my fav of all Pratchetts books. It is fast paced and full of action. The comedy is toned down compared to older discworld books, which in my opinion is a good thing. His earlier books were too silly, and although I loved them, they can't stand up to the like of Thud and Going Postal.
I love this book!
MR PRATCHETT AT HIS BEST!............................... August 26, 2008 What can I say. This book is easily one of the best Pratchetts I have read. It has it all; mystery; suspence; murder; theft; The Pink Pussycat Club; trolls; dwarfs, vampires and werewolves. To top it all there is Lord Vetinari, Sam Vimes and the favourites from the Nightwatch. Throughout all the stirrings of a war between the dwarfs and the trolls, Sam has to be home bang on time every evening to read a story to his little boy. This is a must-read for all Discworld fans. Don't miss it. IT IS A CRACKER!
The Summoning Dark.... July 30, 2008 A truly cracking Terry Pratchett read for long time discworld fans or the new to his work. As with almost all T.P works there is a intelligent and satirical 'real world' theme to this work. The city watch take the starring role and as always dont disappoint. Featuring the 'newer' members of the watch such as Cheery and Detritus taking the lead roles with the old favourites of Nobby and Fred with a more back seat position, although their encounter with Sir Reynold Stitchley at the 'Gallereah' had me in stitches, all abley lead by Sam Vimes. Serious and comedy moments abound, one of the better Ankh Morpork based books of recent times. Top Marks!!
