From Sci-Fi to Fantasy Morgan retains his dominance January 8, 2009 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really enjoy Richard Morgsn's Sci-Fi books which seem to get more inventive and better and better. I was for a very brief time, slightly dissapointed to find that Steel Remains was not Sci-Fi but fantasy, I did however quickly warm to the developing story with his as ever very vivid characters. It did not fail to impress me and I look forward to the next installment. Slightly hard going at times to remember who is who when strange names are used especially for species rather than characters but very gripping. I suspect some may not be entirely happy with a overtly homosexual main character but they will eventually get over it.
Silly, Dull. Avoid January 7, 2009 Old fashioned storyline that tries to be cool with lots of swearing and gay sex. Bizarre and unconvincing. The thing is that so many other books have violence and gay characters that don't feel contrived, it feels like Mr Morgan is trying deliberately spice things up rather than entertain with a good story, like he ran short of good ideas...and it shows.
I would recommend proper old fashioned fantasy by either David Gemmell or Raymond Feist, or proper modern fantasy by either Joe Abercrombie or Scott Lynch, over this offering.
Give the steel remains a miss, let it rust quietly in the second hand bookshops where it will end up.
Stick with his SciFi work December 8, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are looking for Scifi comparable to the best in the world, Richard Morgan's work are must-reads. This particular work feels like cliched and tired with a style of fantasy that belongs in the mid 90s (Tanith Lee / Mercedes Lackay)
Not the usual Morgan November 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a new direction for Richard Morgan, but he pulls it off well.
To be honest, it's a relief after the boredom and drudgery that was 'Black Man'. Some of the characters and subject matter were new to me in the fantasy type realm, and I think this may have put many people off.
If you're looking for something better thought out and more entertaining to read than your average LoTR derivative, this is certainly worth your while!
Science fantasy grows up at last November 2, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Complex well-drawn characters that have real conversations with each other, yeah they fight and have sex, in short they act like real people. The plot is well-timed and keeps you guessing. The story is so well written you won't be able to put it down yet like me you probably won't want to get to the end. I hope this is the first of many fantasy books from Richard Morgan and I would love to read more about these characters, the only downside of reading this book is whatever book you go onto next can only be second rate - nothing compares!
