4 out of 5 stars Not on par with other Dark-Hunter books   December 24, 2007
When disgraced investigative journalist Susan Michaels meets her friend Angie at the local animal sanctuary, despite protests and a very real allergy, she finds herself walking away with a mini leopard which appears to burn in direct sun light. Taking the animal home, she believes a wild prank is taking place when her new cat transforms into Mr Gorgeous. Mistaken for a Squire, Susan finds herself on the run with Ravyn, a shape shifting immortal warrior; the pair wanted for the murder of her best friend Angie and her husband.

Drawn into the secret world of Dark-Hunters, Susan's journalism skills kick in, leaving her determined to find out why her friends were killed and who wants Ravyn dead. Intrigued by Susan, and proud that she certainly has the skills to defend herself in his violent world, Ravyn finds himself falling in love. Haunted by his human mate's betrayal whilst still a Were-Hunter over 400 years ago, an act resulting in the massacre of his pack and his resulting conversion into an immortal, Ravyn never thought this smart mouthed reporter would touch his heart so deeply; Susan in return is willing to tolerate her allergy induced sneezes to be with the man she loves.

I believe this is one of the lowest ratings I have given to one of SK's Dark-Hunter books; but this is only because I'm comparing it to previous DH offerings such as the fabulous "Kiss of the Night" and my most favourite so far in this series, the truly heartbreaking "Seize the Night". SK still excels in creating fabulous characters and explosive action scenes; yet she seemed to fail in establishing the same "I'd die for you" mentality she has instilled in her previous Dark-Hunter heroes and the extremely lucky women they love. I felt this was somewhat emphasised by Ravyn's refusal to become mortal at the end of this story (sorry to give this away but it's an almost incidental detail at the end of this book). His reasons for retaining his immortality are perfectly legitimate; however I remained somewhat disappointed he failed to make the ultimate sacrifice and relinquish his powers for true love as other Dark-Hunters have done.

With the return of Stryker and the introduction of his scheming sister Satara, a handmaiden to Artemis who very much wants to leave the servitude of the Goddess, the pair are stirring up trouble in Seattle, the new location of many Dark-Hunters since hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. We have the return of Savitar, a being all races fear (including the Gods) and the welcome return of Acheron, who manages to escape the clutches of Artemis for a few hours and certainly lends a more than helping hand when a bunch of Dark-Hunters find themselves badly outnumbered by Daimons. We also learn that there are humans with full knowledge of the dark world around them; some in fact conspiring with Daimons in the hunt for Ravyn.

Despite my issue with the lack of emotional connection between Ravyn and Susan, there was certainly nothing wrong with the physical side of their relationship. Action packed, filled with SK's trademark wit and some explosive love scenes, this book is a highly enjoyable read, yet despite recommending "Dark Side of the Moon", as an avid DH fan I was left feeling vaguely disappointed by this book.

2 out of 5 stars Only get it if you have the rest of the series   June 18, 2007

I was disappionted with this book as it was too radical a shift in the behavour of some of the primary character's.The story is about Sara and Rayven, a disgraced reporter and a werehunter outcast. She wants her reputation back and he wants.....? we don't know. You do find out thing about the Squire council and how its a bigger thing but i don't like the other hunter's in the picture in Seattle. They don't interact the same as what we are use to.Then the biggest upset is the way Nick has changed so much from the way he is at the end of unleashed the night.I know he's got issues but to flip so much is too much for me to handle. Also where is the story going with Stryker's revenge? He wants to kill Acheron we know but to kill him and Apollymi is ....how?That story line just seems tangled now, would like to see that sorted out.
Get this if you have the rest but don't if its you're first Hunter book.
Come on Sherrilyn, we know you can do better than this.

4 out of 5 stars An exciting read, and a good story to follow on from   April 23, 2007

What a great book! Not my favourite in the series so far, but definately a worthy read and a great insight to the anger and hatred that will come crashing down between Acheron and Nick. It's a shame in a way as I do really miss the old Nick, but the new one looks to do some serious damage (to himself though me thinks). It was great to see Sherrilyn incorporate Hurricane Katrina into the story, afterall, New Orleans is the main focus point to this series and it was only right she mention it. In the interim though, I missed that it wasn't placed within New Orleans itself.

I liked the Squire council insight in this book, I think so far they have been underestimated, but it proves that they really do have a job and it's not all hawaii shirts and sports cars, they also take it seriously and would risk their own lives for the Dark-Hunter order.

Strykerius - what a villain. I'm finding him quite a hottie, which is probably quite disturbing, but nonetheless, he's a man of virtue and fairness, albeit riddled with evil and hatred. It surprised me a little with the end event, and I almost felt a small piece of respect looming for him - but we'll see how that pans out in later books....

We meet Satara in this book, can I say 'Nasty Much?', she looks to play a part in the Nick and Acheron story and thats all I'm saying - Read this book!

I suppose I should mention the heroine in this book - Susan. I liked her alot but her sarcasm got a little over-used at times and she seemed somewhat irrational with her thoughts and behaviour, and then the next minute she's killing daimon's without battling an eyelid. It seemed a little over the top and so therefore this book isn't my fave but still, a good one to follow on with.

Roll on August 2007, we need 'Devil May Cry' to see how things continue. In the meantime however, there is a short story you can read for free that continues from this novel briefly and it's called 'Fear the Darkness' and is available from Sherrilyn's website www.dark-hunter.com I recommend you reading it if you are a Nick fan!

2 out of 5 stars Only got the book cos I have the rest of them   April 22, 2007

Dear Reader's only get this book if you want to complete your series of the DH's.The action moves from New Orlean's to Seattle and its set after Hurricane Katerina.Nick is reintroducted in this book but what a difference there is with him.I know all DH's have issues but the turn-around with Nick is a shock to the system. There is too much happening in this book that doesn't make sense but i hope she clears that up in the new book.
As for the main character's i think Rayvn is sweet but messed up for not binding with the woman he loves (as he says to his brother that if he was half the man he thought he was he would have bonded with his mate and died on the nite she did). You have to feel for the heroine as she has allergies and an unforgiving family to bully into accepting their brother back into the home.
Please let us have better closure than this book had.

4 out of 5 stars A mystical read   November 30, 2006
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

I liked the dangerous and magical world of dark-hunters sherrilyn has created, this being the first out of her series i have read.
The story is made up of were-hunters-werewolves, Appollites-vamps who at age 27yrs are cursed to die or turn evil and become a Daimon, Daimons feed on human souls, the dark-hunters are powerful shape shifters who protect humans from the Daimons, and finally squires which are humans who pledge to keep the dark hunters from harm in daylight when their vulnerable from daimons. Each mystical species are ruled by a powerful god.
All of the above is quite alot to get your head round however this may be as i haven't read her previous novels, despite this the love story is very enjoyable. At it's most basic the story tells of a reporter susan who is human and doesn't believe in anything mystical. Suddenly she is caught up in the dangerous world of dark-hunters and Daimons all because of one stupid cat she gets stuck with whilst meeting her detective friend who warns her of the dark world humans are unaware exists. Susan feeling the whole thing is a prank is then shocked to find the naked man[Ravyn]in her lounge was her cat and little does she know she has just saved him from being catastrated. Ravyn is a were-wolf turned dark-hunter [after his family killed him for their villages masacre caused by his mates betrayal]lucky escape has led to a deadly dicovery that some how humans are helping their worst enemies the daimons through the police and now the dark-hunters are in great danger of being wiped out and when that happens the daimons will have one big human feast.
Ravyn and susan's impossible love grows in their battle to survive and both are surprised when the gods have destined them a way to be together -she as his mate.
Overall though it has a complex background this is a unique, very imaginitive read.
Note-you are left hanging at the end when it leads on to the dark-hunter god Acheron, you assume this will be her next book yet are not confirmed by any title of it.
