Amazon.co.uk Review When tough-minded sculptor Sam Jones wakes up handcuffed and chained in a cellar full of damp and cockroaches, she spends the hours between Nescafé and vegemite sandwiches trying to work out how she has got here. Chained! is another outing for Henderson's incident-prone heroine, one in which she is as far from the conventional woman-in-peril as it is possible to be without being superhuman. It all starts when she gets a job as technical consultant on a television thriller starring her rather camp boyfriend Hugo, and finds herself caught up in the affairs of actress Sarah, for whom she is performing the welding bits of Sarah's role. Sarah has robust views, vigorously expressed, about the wearing of fur, and has become the target of Animal Rights Groups' hate mail and malicious practical jokes on set--it seems obvious to Sam that she has been mistaken for Sarah. Freed, she helps the police, but also puts her own investigation into play. As always, Henderson is as funny about subcultural milieux--actors, animal-rights people--as she is about her foul-mouthed, mildly predatory heroine; this is an excellent comedy thriller which is both exciting and entertaining. --Roz Kaveney

All trussed up and noplace to go! February 8, 2002 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
How many women, waking up handcuffed and chained to a beam in a basement (with a splitting headache), would initially pass the whole thing off as a hangover and a sexy date gone "slightly awry"? Only Sam Jones, my favorite "crime girl behaving badly". This series is not for everyone, particularly the prudish, but for those of us who enjoy mystery, suspense, witty dialogue, and just a hint of raciness, it's quite enjoyable. Often the underlying mystery is merely a backdrop to Sam's trials and tribulations, and those of her friends and acquaintances. the stories are written with humor in mind, and should be taken that way. The main problem with Sam Jones is that, every time she's around, bad things seem to happen, and people die. It's not her fault but, given her track record, the only fellow who would be likely to take her home to meet his mother would be Norman Bates!
Nice cover. Shame about the book... August 14, 2001 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Chained! is another crime thriller in the Lauren Henderson 'Sam Jones' series. Here, we have the heroine being kidnapped by suspected animal rights fanatics. It soon becomes clear that the kidnappers have abducted her by mistake - it seems they were intending to kidnap a colleague working on the film set Sam was taken from.Sam's time in a cellar whilst kidnapped is brief. This is unfortunate because this is really the only interesting part of Chained! Once Sam has made her escape - via non-too-believable methods - the story switches to trying to infiltrate the animal rights group responsible for her abduction. Sam is aided by various acting 'luvvies' and we're introduced to various stereotyped and bland characters. Dialogue can only be described as unrealistic. Dialogue in fiction should read as though it has been spoken. In Chained!, the characters talk as only a fictional character could talk - "That'll teach you", after a beating. Yeah, okay. For a crime story, there's little to surprise here. You're not given any real reason to feel any sympathy for any of the characters involved - they're simply too boring to worry about. The story attempts to climax with drama and you can see where Henderson has tried to pick up the pace. Unfortunately, the only excitement you'll feel at this point will be knowing that you've nearly finished the book. Nice cover though.
A riveting beginning, but it did flag a bit at the end. May 27, 2001 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Although I was slightly disappointed since I didn't feel it was as good as some of the others, I did enjoy it. Sam is a great character.
When's the next due out?! November 14, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lauren Henderson doesn't disappoint with this latest fantastic Sam Jones novel. Sam is you untypical heroine and she just keeps getting better.Brill! Keep writing Lauren.
God, I wish she would write faster! November 7, 2000 I am always so keen to get my hands on a new Sam Jones book and Chained! is at least as good as the others have been - high praise! Henderson never repeats herself, she's always trying something new, and I loved the whole kidnap/TV set thing, it was really well described - the scene where Sam is found by two guys out cruising had me in stitches. I just wish she would write two a year instead of the miserly one we get at the moment! I checked out the website she runs... and it's as hysterical and clever as the books. Can't recommend this book (or all the other Sam Jones's) strongly enough!
