5 out of 5 stars Mary Wakefield - the Third Book of the Saga   October 25, 2007

Thirty years have passed since the last book. Captain Whiteoak has been killed by a kick from a horse. Augusta has married Sir Edwin Buckley and lives in Devon. Nicholas has married and divorced. Philip, now the Master of Jalna, has married Margaret, the daughter of Dr Ramsay. She too is dead, leaving him with two children Meg and Renny, who are nine and seven. Mary Wakefield, is interviewed for the post of governess by Ernest at Brown's Hotel Mayfair. She gets the job and travels to Jalna. Meg and Renny lead her a pretty dance. She and Philip fall in love and, after many travails, marry. Mary asks for swans on the stream.

Book-5 in the Saga: "The beautiful young governess came to Jalna in the warm summer of 1893 and soon found herself enmeshed in a struggle with the pillars of the Whiteoak family, still dominated by the matriarch Adeline. Mary Wakefield became the centre of a lively family dispute. Not until a flood of emotions, both violent and tender, had been released could life at Jalna resume its peaceful course."

STERLING NORTH:"The finest work on a North American family...comparable to Galsworthy's Forsyte Saga."
