It's not as funnily written as Bollocks to Alton Towers, which I think is in the same category as this book. More of a dip in and dip out type of book which might work as a Christmas present for Guardian readers!
I wouldn't rush out and buy it expecting my sides to split - more of an interesting guide to all the boring things that are considered uniquely British.
Raised a titter if not a guffaw October 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Other reviewers have recommended this book as a "bathroom book" - not necessarily for its toilet humour, but more because it's better to dip in and out of rather than read in one sitting. It'd be ideal as a stocking filler for the men of the family; it's been done before, but still it is pretty amusing, and some entries(where one can confuse a chav with a trainspotter) made me laugh out loud. It's not a classic, it's not outrageously entertaining, but it passes the time and gives a few chuckles.
Mildly amusing October 23, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
This title is a few years behind the proliferation of books about Britain and Britishness and doesn't have anything new or interesting to say about our culture.
Written as an A-Z guide to all things British, this book is occasionally funny, but largely ridden with cliches. I would recommend it for a foreign reader, as it does provide a comprehensive guide to popular culture, but I think that most people in the UK will find this tame and disappointing.
Not as funny as it could or should have been October 19, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was hoping and expecting this to be a funny book but I was disappointed to find that while its written in a way which is supposed to be humorous, but at best it raised a slight smile every ten or so pages. The author has clearly tried to produce an irreverent book here, but it falls just short in the humour steaks.
It's a short book and you can read it cover to cover in a couple of days. I like the fact that the entries are listed alphabetical and you can pick it up and read a couple of entries (which are usually 2-3 pages in length) during an advert break on TV.
Overall a slightly entertaining read, but you may be disappointed that its not as funny as it could be.
Worth the read October 16, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Ok so this book is a wry look at Britishness with a great sense of humour and what I describe as a different slant, very very british but not the usual sense of humor that you tend to find in these sorts of books but a very entertaining diversion from the reality for a short while. This book is well worth a read and anyone who has a sense of humour should enjoy it, I especially enjoyed the section explaining that there are only certain acceptable toppings allowed with chips.....I'm not telling you, you'll have to read it yourself. LOL
