The art of writing a fine thriller August 6, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Simon Kernick proves to be an excellent thriller writer. The novel "Deadline" is a clear reflection of this. Word of mouth of communication persuaded me to actually read the novel. I am really satisfied with what I have read, as it is a well paced thriller novel that really intrigued me for long periods. The plot to the novel always surprised you, when you think it is all over.
The Deadline comprises an explosive plot, credible characters and a well portrayal of the criminal world of London. The suburban life is the key background of the novel. The story is about an ordinary businesswoman Andrea, who's daughter kidnapped by mysterious attackers and she is imposed an ransom to ensure the safe return of the daughter. What are the main motives for the kidnapping? Who can she trust? How does she cope with the terrible ordeals leading to the kidnapping? The answers will be all revealed in the novel.
Simon Kernick's novel demonstrates the art of writing a fine thriller. Deadline tops the list of fine thrillers I have read in recent times. It is richly entertaining and additive piece of reading.
One of Kernick's best August 5, 2008 Having been slightly disappointed with the last few offerings from Simon Kernick I was pleasantly surprised with Deadline. It is a definite page turner and one of those books where you want to put it down but just can't help but go onto the next chapter..... Fingers crossed for more like this one.
Poor Plot, Good Subject Matter Knowledge July 31, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Credit where it's due. Kernick knows his stuff. Tracking devices, London police methods, even some of the characters seem fairly realistic.
But that is about it. The plot is fairly flimsy and when you put the book down you get that distinct impression that you have read this book/seen this film before.
This is just a correct page turner. Nothing to get excited about and certainly don't pay the full price. Airport trash material without a doubt, I can't see myself buying any more books from this author in any other circumstance.
Excellent July 29, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not many books I read where I'm reluctat to put them down because I have other things to do. This is one I could have kept reading right through to the end without stopping. Excellent book and does keep you guessing until near the end. First of Simon's books I have read but will now be buying more.
ANOTHER CRACKING KERNICK BOOK July 24, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Yet again kernick delivers a great breakneck thriller, I enjoyed getting to know Bolt alot better in this book, I find find him a very interesting character and would welcome another outing. the plot is a very basic one but as always kernick throws in a couple of twists, ( of which a couple are very easy to work out.) but all in all an execellent read, If it wasn,t for the fact i had to go to work i think i would of finished the book in 2 days instead of 4. for those of you who have not read the rest of kernicks books they are all fantastic. (especially the buisness of dying) I look forward to his next book, the further adventures of Denis Milne............
