5 out of 5 stars a shocking and dramatic instalment   November 9, 2008
Back from the wasteland, Darren is suffering from nightmares that are telling him the Lord of the Shadows will destroy the world.

Darren Shan has written one of the best vampire series of all time and this eleventh instalment is a fine testament to his writing ability with high intensity and though I say this with every book, the best and most dramatic ending to grace the saga.

The dramatic concept of nightmares is a powerful device to open the book and immediately grabs the reader's attention with a seemingly possible ending to the saga. Darren's fantasy of his showdown with Steve Leonard is highly engaging and you will not put the book down until you have finished the prologue, and even then it's tricky.

Shan's writing style is again purposefully dramatic and entertaining. He uses the basis of the character's past and their personalities to create this dramatic excitement which is evident throughout this eleventh part of a truly brilliant saga.

The vengeance and passion behind Darren's past is very hurtful and whenever Steve or his enemies catch up with him the reader is ultimately engaged in an emotional war of revenge and hate. And this is perhaps the first book where you can really feel the hate and disgust between the protagonists. It was there in books eight and nine but here we get the feeling of true hate and envy rather than school boy enemies. The dramatic and hateful actions by the pair are very promising and with such a dramatic twist at the end, you will hastily grab the final instalment that is Sons of Destiny. And trust me you will hate the villain even more after reading this novel, but love his character for creating such a mouth watering prospect for book twelve.

This book has a central ideology of change. An old friend of Darren's emerges, a clear adult with a job, the relationship between Steve and Darren itself, and the most evident is the purge, the change in Darren's body. This ideology is exciting and executed well by children's best horror novelist Darren Shan and is always entertaining to read. The change from young man into professional adult gives the whole book a growing up feel, which isn't a bad thing, even if it does take the edge
off the central character.

There isn't as much action as many fans may like, and the imagination and mystery of book 10 has disappeared but the dramatic changes to the whole story of the vampire and his life in a world of evil is incredibly entertaining and you won't stop reading until that gut wrenching final chapter that makes you dive for book 12, which will surely be a nerve wracking finale.

8.5/10

5 out of 5 stars Really good!   January 2, 2008
I loved "Lord of the Shadows"! One of the best in the saga (so far), in my opinion!

Darren travels back to his hometown with Harkat and the Crique de Freak, here they met Darrens old school friend (who is now a famous football player), a strange young boy called Darius, an of course, Steve!

Fans of Darren Shan wont be dissappointed with this one!.

5 out of 5 stars He Is Destruction........................   December 9, 2005

It's almost time fellow shansters, the saga is coming to an end and soon we'll find out who will rule the night: a vampire prince, or a vampaneze lord.

Set 2 years after we find out who Harkat used to be the two friends are still with the cirque, but Darren's break from the hunt is over, he must return to where it all began and let destiny take course, he must return home!

We are reintroduced to old friends as well as old enemies including: Debbie, Alice, Annie, Tommy Jones, Morgan James, RV and, of coure, Steve Leopard.

I don't want to give away thye ending, but rest assured, once you finish this book you will have to read sons of destiny to satisfy your bloodlust!
