disappointing filler to the Black Jewels Trilogy December 11, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm afraid that unlike the other reviewers here I'm not a great fan of this book. I understand the temptation of Bishop to revisit her enthralling creation but actually I think she should have left the trilogy alone as the stories here, especially the last one, Kaeleer's Heart, presses it out of shape.
In this last (long) short story she picks up the relationship between Daemon and Jaenelle directly after the end of the trilogy but twists it into something far tamer and more akin to standard romance than it deserves. Daemon becomes domesticated and while he is allowed a few moments of return to being the Sadist, the dark heart of him that makes him such a fascinating character becomes eroded.
Like many other Bishop fans, I had to buy this book when it came out but in lots of ways I wish I hadn't. So if you love the trilogy and can resist the temptation, I wouldn't read this.
Wonderful for fans April 12, 2007 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Four 'short' stories, that elaborate on the main characters of the Jewels Trilogy. The first is a rather abstract chapter about the archnian queen. The second one is a detailed story about how Lucivar met and married Marian, the third a short look into Saetans past and the last a very passionate story about Jaenelle and Daemon shortly after the purge at the end of Queen of Darkness. These stories might not make much sense to anyone who hasn't read the trilogy, I'm can't really tell. They are less 'political', more personal than the trilogy and much more sexual! It's almost as if Anne Bishop had to edit some of the sex out of her books - to keep the Fantasy label and stick to the plot- and then, after they'd been succesful, was given a bit of free reign. I really enjoyed these stories very much.

Great book, however please note the previous reviewer states the author being "Carey". This book is written by the wonderful Anne Bishop!
A fitting introduction...or finale...or even both! September 25, 2005 19 out of 26 found this review helpful
My first question is: Have you read the Black Jewels Trilogy? If not, why not and why are you looking at this wonderful quartet? On with you and read the trilogy! If yes, then you're possibly wondering what is so great about this book. Well, I'll tell you. Carey has done it again. Not only does she give us Jaenelle's life to follow, with those three great men to stand by her side, but here she gives us who those men really are. Saetan Daemon SaDiablo, High Lord of Hell - meet him in his younger days, when his rule is almost new, his power as yet fully realised and his love for his family tested to the limit. Lucivar Yaslana - last born son of Saetan, born with fire in his heart and the desire of freedom in his soul, meets the one woman who can tame one and match the other. Daemon Sadi - the mirror. Of the three, it is he who has earned the love of the Queen all serve. It is he who can match her. It is he who will give everything he is to protect her and keep her love with him. To each Carey dedicates pages in which we learn to love them more than ever before, see their suffering as never before, learn of their dreams clearer and truer then they were when we first met them. Let's not forget - Carey also tell us of the birth of the Blood, that fateful blessing cum curse of which these three men are part. The well of power from which they gain their strength and honour...all is laid bare. To be honest, it's not a prerequisite to read the Black Jewels Trilogy. You can love these men without ever reading it. But I can guarantee, if you read this collection you will want to know what happened next, what happened before. If you've read it, read this. Either way, Carey has written another extraordinarily lovely and feeling set of stories. Go on...just read them.

"Dreams Made Flesh" comprises of 4 short stories focusing on the main characters featured within the Black Jewels trilogy, namely Jaenelle, Daemon, Lucivar and Saetan, although other familiar faces from all the realms feature.Weaver of Dreams The first and shortest story within this collection centres on the nameless daughter of Draca. At the brink of death the dragon passes on her gift of dream weaving to a small golden spider. The Prince of Ebon Rih This story catalogues the meeting of Lucivar and Marian, the purple dusk Eyrian hearth witch he marries. We learn how Marian came to meet Jaenelle, her uncomfortable relationship with Luthvian (Lucivar's mother) and how she won the heart of an ebon-grey jewelled Eyrian Warlord Prince. Zuulaman Set during his marriage period to Heketah, Saetan is blackmailed into signing unfair trade agreements in Zuulaman's favour after receiving news that the kingdom holds his heavily pregnant wife hostage. Drawing on the full power of his black jewels, Saetan's response is formidable, wiping Zuulaman, its people and history from existence. Kaeleer's Heart This beautiful tale is set just after Jaenelle returns from the healing web and details how her radical reduction in power affects those around her. This story also follows up her relationship with Daemon and his battle with a jealous and manipulative witch intent on having Daemon as her own. When Jaenelle's life is threatened the streets of Amdarh face the icy rage of the Sadist. What can I say but Wow - I've been left breathless after having all my expectations reached and possibly even surpassed. Not only did this book include a fantastic conclusion to the truly memorable Black Jewels trilogy, it also contained personal stories centring on my most favourite characters. I cannot imagine a fan of Anne Bishop's mind-blowing Black Jewels trilogy being left disappointed with this book. - if you love her previous works you'll love this!
