1 out of 5 stars Veyr bad writing   October 29, 2008
I have to agree with most of the negative reviews of this book on Amazon. It is obvious that the author has only a rudimentary grasp of how to construct a novel. There is frequent repetition of phrases, a narrow vocabulary, lack of tension, poor character development, wooden dialogue and no plausibility at all (I know it's supposed to be paranormal but I'm not talking about the premise here - it's the characters that are two-dimensional). Basically, it is like a B-movie in book form. The central relationship is contrived and feels unnatural and there is literally nothing to keep you reading. I can only assume that those who gave positive reviews are judging it as part of the series that gets better in later books. However, I won't be sticking around to find out.

5 out of 5 stars Be warned, you`ll be buying the whole series!   August 8, 2008
I bought this book, Dark Prince, purely by accident in the shop in which I work in and I am glad I did. I am currently up to number nine in the series and absolutely cannot put them down! I was instantly engrossed in the plot and the developement of the relationship between the two main characters, Michail and Raven. I do feel however that this is not the best book in the series but still a very good read and a great introduction to the Carpathians saga. Each book does stand on its own but I would recommend reading this one first to fully emerse yourself in these brilliant books. An addicting and pleasurable read!

I bought this based on reviews I'd read here, and because I'd read Kresley Cole and was looking for something similarly entertaining but not too challenging ... but I definitely got it wrong here! The major challenge was actually in keeping going: this was a boring, boring, boring book that took itself far too seriously, was really stiffly written, and had two of very wooden central characters . And the sex scenes were awful. I ploughed on with it but in the end I decided that life is too short - and I always finish books, even the ones I find hard going.

Stay away from this - there have got to be better vampire books out there!

2 out of 5 stars Cliché romance and weak plotline   April 15, 2008

After reading some of the (positive) reviews about the Carpathian's books and honestly believing that a saga that can last for so many books HAS to be good, I bought Dark Prince.

I should have stayed putt.

If romance for you makes no sense unless it's thrown in a good storyline and good characters, stay away from this book!

The plot is secondary, the scenes are confusing, it's nearly impossible to feel for the characters as they don't have any real substance. Both Mikhail and Raven are two-dimensional, rather mindless, and their physical and stereotypical perfection only makes it worst.

As for the flow of the romance, the writer should learn the basics about "foreplay". A good book is translated in a sexy dance between the words in it and the reader's mind. It's really necessary to made the reader want really really bad for romance to happen for it to mean something. The fun is in the antecipation, not is just dropping the "delivery" onto the reader's lap hoping he/she will focus on the sex and forget how it came to happen. This book is just blunt. A one night stand, and a bad one at that.

Buy at your own risk.

4 out of 5 stars A good beginning   September 25, 2007

This is a good start to an interesting series. Its not my favourite but a necessary starting point, I feel, as it introduces you to all the future characters, their species and their way of life.

I cant imagine trying to read these books without starting here.

Mikhail is the Prince of the Carpathian's. A dying breed who have supernatural powers, shapeshifting, enormous power and charisma. They are immortal and live for over 2000 years.

The males lose their emotions after 200 years and they see life in black and white. Their duty to their people is to hunt the vampires and vampire hunting humans alike, until they find their lifemate. Their lifemate is the woman who will bring light to their darkness. The other half of their soul which will bring balance to their existance. Bringing back the colour and emotions to their world.
