Very disappointed in this product October 15, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I was very pleased when I saw this calendar advertised. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of my favourite shows when it was on air and I was glad that so many years after it ended it was still popular enough to warrant its own calendar.
However, to say I was disappointed was an understatement. How about more like disgusted?
Though the calendar is otherwise perfectly acceptable, the picture for January completely ruins it. This is a large picture of Buffy with small screen caps of her with each of her onscreen boyfriends - Angel, Riley and Spike. Whereas the pictures with Angel and Riley are of nice moments between Buffy and the two men, the one of her with Spike is from one of the most shocking and controversial scenes in the show, when Spike tried to rape her in season 6.
I am disgusted by this for two reasons. Firstly, that the Buffy/Spike relationship has been singled out to be treated in this negative way. Yes, this was a horrible moment between them, but there were many nice ones, both in season 5 and particularly in season 7, after Spike got his soul back for Buffy and then died for her. Why could not a picture from one of these more positive scenes be shown, particularly as there were many times in both Buffy's previous relationships which were pretty unpleasant too, and yet both the Buffy/Angel and Buffy/Riley relationships have been shown in a wholly positive light in this calendar.
I would recommend any fans of Spike and Spike/Buffy not to buy this calendar.
Secondly, even if you don't like Spike or Spike/Buffy, I can't believe that anyone would want to spend a whole month with a picture of attempted rape hanging on their wall. For reasons of good taste alone, the use of this screen cap was an appalling decision on someone's part. For my own peace of mind, I choose to believe it was done from ignorance rather than malice.
I am returning my copy to Amazon. I'd intended it as a gift, but the use of this screencap makes that impossible. This product should carry a warning that it contains scenes of attempted rape. Also, the image shown on the Amazon page is misleading, as the calendar image for September is not the same as the one depicted.
