Excellent overview November 21, 2008 I believe this books provides an excellent overview of a very complex region. Few people have such an up to date insight into wine making in Burgundy. The first part of the book provides a detailed overview of wines and wine makers, the second part reviewes the vintages. Indeed, it is unlikely many people are going to taste wines older then a decade, but it still provides much insight into the best wines.
Tasting notes August 5, 2008 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Contrary to what the two other reviewers of this book have stated,to me one of the strengths of the book is the tasting notes. The majority of wine enthusiasts are going to seek out older wines to drink as they appreciate that most good burgundy needs plenty of bottle age before it is at its best. The book is very well written and represents good value at the price.----------lets face it, you would struggle to buy a half decent bottle of burgundy for the price of this book!!!
What a rip-off May 21, 2008 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
The previous reviewer has pointed out the major flaws in this book but was still far too lenient. The second half of the book is taken up with a huge collection of tasting notes that are pretty much useless to the vast number of people who will buy this book. As anyone who buys Burgundy knows, the only time that a wine is widely available is when it's first released - 'widely' being a relative term as most wines are produced in limited quantities. So what use is a tasting note for a 15-year-old wine? It isn't going to help me decide which wines to buy as the wine is unlikely to be available anywhere and it's pretty damn unlikely that I have any of it in my collection - apart from anything else, the wines included are from Burgundy's higher echelons (grand and 1er cru) and would have been out of my reach anyway. Removing these notes would have either brought the price of the book down considerably or enabled Coates to expand the producer profiles, which are, in many cases, mere stubs with little useful information.
Buy either Serena Sutcliffe's or Anthony Hanson's books - the price to useful information ratios on these two are considerably better.
Clive Coates-The wines of Burgundy May 5, 2008 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought this book because Clive Coates perhaps more than any wine writer has an in depth knowledge of Burgundy. The 1997 volume was outstanding but this rewrite is not as good. It would have been perhaps more helpful to have the domaine profiles of the last volume expanded and updated rather than having copious tasting notes of old vintages many of which I am never going to experience. The double columns on each page make for difficult reading. The maps are outstanding.
