A fun adventure for the 6-9s that's kind of Toy Story swirled inventively with The Nutcracker! October 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A gift of unusual cosmic pyjamas, unexpectedly shrinks a brother and sister duo are shrunk and transports them to a magical Christmas Toyshop where all is not as it should be. The Christmas Tree fairy is worn, tattered and fed up after years with a pine tree branch in her nether regions and has an evil plan to stop Christmas coming. With a host of toy characters, dinosaurs and barbie dolls amongst them, and funny touches guaranteed to get primary children sniggering (e.g. the pun of Mince Spies and Max having to dress as a girl), Ellie and Max discover the evil scheme afoot. The baddies (tree angels, snowmen etc) are making a towering Marzipan Man (think the Shrek giant Gingerbread man, or the marshmallow giant in Ghostbusters?) with a mega marzipanator gun to finish off Father Christmas and Christmas festivities for ever. But the children turn the "monster under the stairs" to their advantage ensuring a happy ending. I bought this book last week under pressure from my 8 year old daughter and six year old son, both of whom read it once, read it all over again, and loved. It's a great seasonal offering from Jeremy Strong, full of good-humoured spirit and energy and perfectly pitched to appeal to both boys and girls from about age 6. It's packed with sparkle and adventure that's enough to absorb a newly confident reader but won't terrify them. And (excitingly for my children) it seems to be the beginning of a new series about the Cosmic Pyjamas. I look forward to seeing where they take us next! If you love this also try Jeremy Strong's Invasion of the Christmas Puddings which has the same bright feel.
