I was given this book by a teenage collegue,who said this was a great read and as I'm in my late twenties was fairly sceptical. It certainly prove me wrong. I really enjoyed this book and just before i finished it, i bought the next in the triology. I saw the film after i had read the book and the film disappointed. It is not a patch on the film. Read this book instead of watching the film!

Very enjoyable read, Pullman has created a world which although shares some similarities to our own differs hugely, i thoroughly enjoyed exploring this world and cant wait to move on to the next book in the series to cross the bridge with Lyra and Pan into the other worlds.

Yes, I was secretly looking for a book to fill the gap that Harry Potter had left, I must admit. But it IS unfair to compare Phillip Pullman to JK Rowling - for each have their own inimitable style and creative vision.
The story of Lyra hooks you in, right from the start. Though the world she lives in is a different one to ours, half the fun comes from exploring it with her as she begins her adventures.
I Have yet to see the film, but I have a feeling Nicole Kidman as the sinister yet glamourous Mrs Coulter and Daniel Craig as galant Lord Asriel are perfect for the roles - reading the book with them in mind made it all the more enjoyable. (Also I have no doubt that the film will not do the book justice - as is always the case !)
A gripping read - sometimes a bit technical / political in places - yet if you can bear with it, it all makes itself clearer the deeper you go. It is a magical page turner, one you want to read as quickly as you can, but would regret if you did. It would be a shame not savour the exciting journey every page takes you on.

I have just finished reading this book and found it to be enjoyable and hard to put down. The plot takes several twist's and turns which make for an enjoyable read. In the beginning of the book the main character Lyra starts out her journey at an Oxford college so I can see how other people might compare it to Harry Potter. Once it gets going though its nothing like Harry Potter its in a world of its own ;-). The books story reminds me a bit of the the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
I have yet to see the film and just hope its as good as the book. I cant wait to read the next instalment.
I would definitely recommend this book to my friends

I was fortunate enough to be exposed to the philosophies of this story from a very young age.
This has given me the imagination and insight in to these ideas through out my life.
I loved the film, I did find it a little long in some places, but I thought it was wonderful and I couldnt wait to read the book.
The books arrived from amazon about 2 weeks ago and I couldnt wait to get stuck in.
I read the Golden Compass in around 2 weeks, which is the fastest I have every read a book in my life.
I was totally engrossed and loved every single page, Pullmans writing style is wonderful and I was totally caught up in his world.
This book got a lot of press as it attracted the religious nutters, as it does talk a lot about God, The Church, and Religion.
The morral of this story is about Free Will, and Original Sin.
The Christian God gave us free will when he kicked "us" out of the "garden of Eden"
This book deals with that idea that humans have free will thanks to their creator, yet, through out history there have always been organisations that have tried to take it away from them, The Church being one of them.
Telling people how to behave, how to think and how to live their lives has always been a way of the chruch.

The Children in the story are "cut" from their Deamons (A soul that inhabits an animal form that lives out side the body)
In this process of cutting the children are almost stunted or forced to grow up.
It is a bit like in the past when young men were castrated so that they would keep their high voices, the church had no problem in mutilating young men in that way, and this is real life, not fiction.
I find it hilarious that the religious groups can throw mud at these books and writers like this, when THEIR CHURCHS have been responsible for so much death and so many terrible things through out history.
I would recommend this book to any one who loves fantasy and is also interested in Quantum Mechanics.
A great read!
