An Epic Tome November 1, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
"Tome" doesn't begin to describe the detail in this book. Looking at the teeny tiny font on the double-page spread of the contents page is slightly overwhelming. There're tables and flowcharts everywhere, detailing everything you could ever want to know about Fallout. Every single area is mapped out and scrutinised, telling you exactly where to go in your local area to grab some ammo and stimpacks or whatever.
If you don't normally thing guides are value for money - and god knows most aren't, since games these days are so short - then take another look at this one. It's gigantic, this hardbacked edition weighs heavily in your hands. Fallout 3 is a massive game, so it needs a massive guide - and this is it. Everything you could ever want to know.
But why should you buy this more expensive edition over its normal cousin? Here's why:
It's hardbacked. This is much more useful than you think, because this is the kind of book that you dip into when you're looking for something - you don't really just follow a walkthrough from start to finish. So you'll be doing a lot of leafing through the book, something that a mere paperback can't handle for long.
Second, it has an extra chapter at the end written by - or perhaps with - some of the Bethesda staff. It has a TON of concept art and a log of their development process, which is nice if you like that kind of thing. It has a brief section of combat tips from the Bethesda people, too.
Third, it has a huge - HUGE - poster-map of the game. On one side it has a map of the Wasteland - on the other, a map of the DC metro. Invaluable if you stick it by your computer, and also not bad-looking.
I highly recommend buying one or other edition of this guide - I got this one, because I like hardbacked guides - they don't fall apart, even when you go back to the game five years later. And it's still cheaper than the regular guide on the high-street.
Another guide book October 31, 2008 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
I got the game fallout 3 special collectors edition which came this morning and it is a nice pack as well it has a special cover that has to be removed to get to the box and in side the box which is good by the way is a book of art a making of video a lil mini guide for the first section and a lil figure whos head will nod away oh and the game of course and to go along with this i also got the fallout collectors guide book a lil bit more but it is worth the extra i dare say the guide will come in handy but i will try not to use that right away and just go on a walk about get used to the controls while you can finnsih the game with out the guide still nice to have it there over all lovely hard back should last the only down side if you can call it that is the lack of detail pic's and the map is a bit easy to tear so be carefull ish and have fun
If carlsberg did guide books October 30, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
received mine today and its way better than i expected. it's jam packed with nearly 500 A4 pages that contain everything you need to know and there's no large pictures used as fillers (infact hardly any screen shots, just maps and pics of things that will help). In this edition theres some bonus chapters which are fun to read. There's also a seperate large double sided map but i would of prefered this in the book as poster maps can easily get ripped etc. This is a very nice hardback book that will help to get every drop of enjoyment out of the game. This is probably the best guide book i've ever bought, even better than the oblivion guides and for once it's well worth getting the 'collectors edition'
