Hall of Fame Game designer, Sid Meier, has been called "The Father of Computer Gaming" with such early hits as F-15 Stealth Fighter, Railroad Tycoon, and Pirates. He put computer gaming on the map however, in 1991, when he delivered Sid Meier's Civilization to the gaming world launching the "God Game" genre and creating one of the most award winning and addicting games on the planet. Civilization remains one of the world's top selling PC game series with over 8 million units sold and is recognized by the press as one of the greatest game franchises ever created.

In Civilization, players strive to become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the dawn of man into the space age waging war, conducting diplomacy, discovering technologies, going head-to-head with some of history's greatest leaders, and building the most powerful empire the world has ever known.

Civilization Revolution Features

Choose Your Civ - Choose from 16 Civilizations throughout history (from Africa to Germany to America to China) to lead to victory. Each time you defeat a rival civilization you'll add an exhibit to your Hall of Achievements paying homage to your great accomplishments. With so many Civs and Leaders to play, you'll have a new and exciting experience with every game.

Lead Your Civ - When you choose a Civ play as one of the world's most famous historical leaders (like Abe Lincoln, Otto von Bismarck, and Mao Zedong) and compete against the other leaders as you strive to create your own history in this epic game. Each leader will have 4 special abilities giving their Civ unique advantages throughout the ages.

Real-Time Interaction - Leaders and advisors will actively communicate with you - even turning and pointing to things in the world as they speak - making the interactions more realistic and engaging than ever before.

Explore The World - Your quest to explore and discover will have you traversing the globe in search of long lost relics, rival civs, technologies, barbarians and much more.

Fast-paced Action - Accessible maps and streamlined time scale will deliver quicker games and constant action.

Intense Combat - Triple your strength by combining up to three units into one powerful army and destroy your enemies. When your units win tough battles, they will become veterans and then elites. You can then choose from a list of powerful upgrades that will give elite units even more strength to dominate in war. Your Army will wear a distinct uniform representing your Civilization, so you will easily see them on the screen as you lead them into battle.

Civilopedia - an invaluable in-game multi-media resource that informs and entertains players with authentic videos, pictures and background information about the real world elements in Civilization.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, addictive but somewhat lacking.   November 7, 2008

I recently purchased a PS3 and the other day I was on a hunt to find a game or two to keep me occupied. I spied Civ Rev peeking at me from a bottom shelf in Game and it had a pretty sale sticker on it. I've been a massive fan of Civ 2 for years, and to this very day still play it (mainly at work but shush about that ;p) so given this, along with the fact it seemed to score quite well in reviews, I thought I'd give it a go.

So I get home and stick the game in (and make a cup of tea whilst waiting for the installation). I wasn't quite sure what to think of the more cartoony approach to graphics but I thought I'd bear with it and get stuck in.

One of the first things that I found interesting was how each race had a different bonus that became active at various points in the game, meaning you would have to vary your strategy depending on who you were and who you were against.

Another thing I like about this game is it has various ways to win, in the form of Domination, Economy, Culture and Technology, meaning that if you're against an opponent with a strong army that you just can't overcome you could learn all the games advancements and build a spaceship and still win (although by far the easiest way to win the game is to build an army and trample the other races).

I started play on the easiest mode just to get to grips with things and, after a few tips for the games advisers, I was away... and therein lies my biggest issue with this game. Even if I had never played it before I could still have been 'away' after such little information. It doesn't seem to matter what technology you learn or what you build, as long as you have a half decent army then you're pretty much guaranteed a victory... of pretty much any kind you like, or so it seems each time I've played it.

Once you establish a foothold as the strongest race it seems to be just a matter of time before you win. Each time I've played I have been in a situation where I could pick what sort of victory I wanted then just ride it out to the end, which really takes the fun out of things. There is an addictive quality to this though, as even when victory is certain, you HAVE to see it to the end. Anyway, I digress..

On the whole this game seemed to me like a kids version of Civ, and certainly not on a par with the older games. It lacks the depth and complexity, and is stupidly easy even with the difficulty ramped up. On civ 2 I still sometimes struggle on the easiest setting, as one bad decision can lead to long term crisis, whereas in the latest incarnation you can easily recoup.

The bottom line: if I want a relatively quick fix of Civ I will play this game happily, but generally I'll be sticking with the older versions if I want a serious game.

3 out of 5 stars A Real Shame   November 4, 2008

The PS3 needs games like this or it will be all first person shooters and racing games...

But this is Civ-lite as has been said before. The world you play in is small, with only a couple of other civs to go up against. You only need to build 4 or 5 cities.

It's a real pity as the battles are superb and the best ever in the series- creating armies and watching them be promoted to different ranks is really enjoyable.

Can consoles STILL not handle these games?! How long will it be? Xbox 720? Playstation 6?

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the consol   September 26, 2008

I really like this game. For me, some of the criticisms are postivie points.

I like that the game only lasts a few hours. I know some people like to play for hours, days and weeks on civilisation. But that is not for me. I like it short and sweet so I can start a new game.

Anyway the game is very good and I wouldn't play civilisation any other way.

If you want some good quality turned based entertainment that you can play on a consol and finish in a reasonable time, then you will probably love this. If you want your Civ to last for a lot longer, you would be best sticking to the PC.

The only sore point for me is the lack of customization in the units for the individual civilisations. On the other hand, it doesn't impact on the game play at all.

2 out of 5 stars Revolved not evolved   September 18, 2008

What an opportunity to get this classic game on the PS3 - the graphics, the playability, the hours you could spend...
What a disappointment.
In the hurry to get this game on the shelves, the developer stripped all the things that make this game's predecessors great, out of it, and left in its place shoddy graphics, slow game play, lags in the system, no planning capability, and what makes it all so much worse, they even have you on a timer system, where you cannot even keep developing... the clock ticks on and the game ends....

Sid Meier should be ashamed to be associated with this. Hold on - the clock ticks on and that's all I get to s

4 out of 5 stars Good for newbies   August 23, 2008

I love the PC Civilisation games and their genre. I am more than happy spending days playing one game and slowly and methodically working my way through the ages. So having had a go on the demo I purchased the full version.

If you are a devotee of the previous Civilisation games then do not assume that this is a games console version of the same. It is not. In my opinion the game is "dumbed down", being far shorter, offering far less options and being less involved. Other reviews call the game "Civilisation Light" and I think this tag is an appropriate one.

However, is this a bad thing? Not necessarily - if you want a "quick" game (i.e. a few hours) rather than a epic marathon struggle lasting days then it is still a turn based strategy game with a lot to offer.

For my 10 year old son it has introduced him to the strategy game genre, and he loves it. In time I'll move him on to the more involved PC versions. The graphics are colourful and engaging for the younger audience - the animated units means that battles have some interest for the console generation. My son's friend remarked, "I thought this would be boring, but it looks quite good."

So for experienced strategists - take it for what it is, but as a game to interest younger players or convert new audiences to the strategy genre then a worthy purchase. As with any game, download and try the demo first before you part with your cash.

Main criticisms - the in-game advisors and leaders. They appear constantly (you can't switch them off) and repeat the same gibberish in "sim-speak" over and over. Within minutes it becomes tedious. Also the game has frozen several times and I've had to reset the console - very annoying when you've been playing for a few hours and you lose all your progress. I presume this a problem with the game, as I've had no problems with any other titles.
