3 out of 5 stars An improvement on the last one, but only just   October 7, 2008
For long standing Cornwell fans this book isn't going to raise your spirits; as a series it's still marching downhill and I'm not sure how much more mileage there is left. The major problem (apart from the much noted and puzzled over change in style) is that the characters are no longer people you can respect or admire anymore. They have all become more and more flawed and are nothing like the ultra competent, slick, professional team they once were: quite frankly if it wasn't for Lucy's money and the fact that she has created her own little agency whom everyone can work for, I'd think they'd all struggle to find jobs.

That said, it did keep me turning the pages with more enthusiasm than Trace and as a thriller it ticked all the boxes. But, it's nothing special and where once Cornwell and her characters' had the edge, they are now distinctly average. If you see it in a charity shop, buy it and read it to keep up with the series otherwise, invest in something a little fresher.

1 out of 5 stars Lost its way   April 15, 2008
Having read every book Ms Cornwell has published, I felt dutifully compelled to buy her most recent Scarpetta novel - Predator, despite being disappointed recently with a change in her style which for me, has destroyed some of the intrigue and charm her writing used to posess. Nevertheless, a true fan 'sticks with it'. However, Predator left me feeling short-changed, flicking back through the pages to see if I'd lost any given the plot itself was a little 'thin on theground'. A poor offering I'm afraid. Scarpetta and the possee need a bit of a re-vamp.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Cornwell   April 6, 2008
I have been a huge Cornwell fan for years but am wholly disappointed with the lastest offering. I've had it since it was first published in paperback but put off reading it because I had been disappointed with the last couple of Scarpetta books. I was right to hold off it really was boring. I've come to the end and I still don't have answers to half of the questions posed by Cornwell herself it seemed to me that she got really fed up near the end and wrote the last couple of chapters in a rush. (Perhaps she had a holiday booked or something!)

If you're listening to your fans Patricia stop writing in the tense you're using and re-capture your enthusiasm for the story that we knew and loved so much!

The plot in this Scarpetta novel is actually fair but again Cornwell's new writing style kills it. It's cold, distant, uninvolving. The characters are so flat and unpleasant, it's hard to really care about what goes on and what happens to them. Disappointing read.

1 out of 5 stars Awful!!   March 25, 2008
What absolute drivel - I read the early Scarpetta books and they were excellent, so what has happened?

I haven't read any of Cornwell's books for about two years and picked this one up thinking that it would be a good read - what a mistake - I can't even be bothered to finish it. The dialogue is tedious and esoteric, unless of course you're an ex-FBI agent or a forensic pathologist.

There is hardly any story in it and the characters are without substance, so much so that I couldn't care less what they do or what happens to them and this means that, to me, this is a dreadful book.

Of course, on the cover it says it 'An International Best Seller'. We all know what that means as almost everything you pick up is one of those which doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

I am coming around to the belief that Book Reviewers are being paid by the publishers to say that books are 'great, wonderful, marvellous, etc., etc.'. Do they actually READ the books they are so mistakenly euologising? I really do wonder.

I, for one, will not be reading anymore of Cornwell's books. Pity, her first ones were great.
