Excellent... November 4, 2008 ...for sending me off to sleep!
Only managing to read 2-3 pages a night, it's taken me ages to finish this book. It is so unbelievably dull and I loathe PC's changed writing style. Have given her the benefit of doubt for the last time. She should be embarrassed to have such rubbish published.
Not Great At All October 21, 2008 The last two or three Scarpetta novels have been nowhere near as good and this one's the worse by far. With around 50 pages to go I wanted to jack it in but persisted. Loads of confusing, loose ends and it seems rushed. I'm bloody annoyed as there was a "hanging" ending and I'm interested to know what happens next. However, if she hadn't written an ending like this I'd not be bothering anymore as they're not the great stories they used to be.
Utter tripe October 20, 2008 This was the first Patricia Cornwell book I'd bought, to take on holiday with me. It will indeed be the last as it was absolute tripe. So I thought "maybe it's me and I've missed the point somehow". Anyway having come on here it's reassuring to know it isn't just me. The title sounded interesting but turns out to be the book they log the corpses details in at the morgue and is referred to about twice. I had no empathy with any of the characters. The plot was none existent. I know about as much about the murderer and reason he was doing it now as I did at page one. The "story" was "explained" right at the end when PC thought "Jeepers, thats nearly 400 pages, lets get this finished off quick sharp". If you want to read about how to get DNA off a piece of glass with super glue this is the book for you. If you want to be mildy entertained buy a Jeffrey Deaver or indeed anything by anyone else other than Patricia Cornwall. Self indulgent rubbish.
Mush October 20, 2008 Like many other reviewers I ask myself how a series of crime books which were brilliant, with characters who were interesting and forensic detail that was compelling, has turned, like a corpse in the Body Farm, to mush? It's my fault as I keep reading them, hoping that a return to form is imminent. This was as bad as "Predator", "Trace" and "Blowfly" in the laboured portrayal of the characters and the weak plot. When Benton Wesley died Scarpetta should have been killed off, too, perhaps in a Thomas Hardy type ending which also saw the demise of Lucy. PS: What ever happened to the Loup Garou in "Last Precinct"?
Why can't I give this 0 stars ?? October 16, 2008 I read all the time, and a good book has me in a good mood while it lasts - and not just whilst I'm actually sitting down to read it. Normally a crime thriller will take me about a week and a half to read.
This book has taken me about 6 months and has made me question my own ability to focus and understand plotlines. I'm only glad I've just noticed that other reviewers have had the same issue.
The reason: this book is over indulgent plot-free tripe. Patricia Cornwell/Kay Scarpetta (for it is surely the same person) thinks that she is a lot more important than she actually is.
This is the worst book I have ever read and goodness only knows why I persisted to the end. To anyone who thinks they might buy it - do youself a favour and don't bother. At least you will waste weeks trying to wade through the monotony. At worst you'll put yourself off reading for a while, if not for ever.
In summary: If someone has invented a computer program to randomly string words together into sentences and then randomly concatenate the results into a book (which I'm sure someone has) then I don't think the computer program could fail to better this book. Its that bad.
