Does not contain the script! November 20, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book is a must for any avid fan of the show "Wicked".
I originally bought this book because I was told by the theatre staff at the apollo, that the script for the show was in it, after I asked if the script was available for the show... this loses the book a star and a the staff lose a star too... this book DOES NOT contain the script to Wicked at all, it merely has small excerpts from various scenes throughout the show, which from my point of view was a major disappointment.
However, with that said, this book is still fantastic. The whole book shows character and is created to look old and antique, the cover is beautifully crafted to feel soft and has a lovely texture and feel to it. Each page has been printed beautifully and is pleasing to the eye.
The contents of the book take you from it's origional book to it's creation as a stage masterpiece. There are sections about every aspect of the show that you could possibly imagine, including costume and set design, to beautiful pictures of origional cast members.
So, if you just want the script this is not for you, but if you are just crazy about the show go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Perfect Accompaniment to a Perfect Show September 9, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm pretty sure that if you're looking at this book then it's somehow linked to the highly successful musical. Whether you've seen the show and loved it or maybe you know someone else who loves it I can only recommend that this is a great purchase for anyone who really enjoyed "Wicked - The Musical"
I should point out that I'm a pretty typical British guy. I love my football more than I love my music, films, books, etc so you could hardly label me a "theatre-buff". I do still really enjoy my entertainment (usually American-produced) & I catch any show that takes my fancy but it's usually musicals with very-high production-values that I enjoy most. I have to say that "Wicked" simply blew me away - the music, the perfomances, the sets, the story, everything really.
Quickly after seeing the show I read Gregory McQuire's novel which I'd had my eye on for years but it was "The Grimmerie" that really gave me most pleasure to read. I love Behind-the-Scenes books anyway but this book is sheer class. It's inevitably linked to the original Broadway production so in terms of performers the cast won't be the same ones you'll be watching in theatre's now but everything else is directly related to the show you'll have seen.
Probably the most beautifully-produced book I own, it's 200 pages of superbly insightful text & pictures that takes the reader through the entire process of getting Wicked onto the stage, all bound in a wonderful soft-to-the-touch cover.
The whole design of this book oozes class, from the quality of the paper it's made from to the design of each page & I guess if I had any criticism it's that the number of full page photo's & almost-complete words & music of the entire show do take up a lot of the 200 pages but that's just being greedy and wanting more text.
Overall if you enjoyed the show and would either like a great souvenir or would just love to know more about "Wicked" then I can't recommend The Grimmerie enough
"The Grimmerie" is truly a magic of its own July 17, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Being a huge Wicked fan, I asked my mother to buy me The Grimmerie for my birthday, and I was in no way let down.
The presentation of the book in itself is lush, detailed and in a world of it's own. The thickly padded cover is comfortable to the feel, and the textured pattern on the front cover offers a nice contrast with the smoothness of the rest of the front. Even the writing its very self is printed in a way to seem natural looking on the book, and the aged effect appears very pleasing to the eye.
Inside, the book is full of interesting snippets of information, including information on the background and writing of each song in the show, and there are interviews with the cast members over their decisions on how to portray their characters. The pages are once more made to look old and worn, but the information and pictures on them still manage to look beautiful, vibrant and bring to life the musical in a way not seen before in print.
At close to 200 pages, the book may seem rather short as a complete background to the show, but the pages are packed with so much text, information, and imagery to keep even the least enthusiastic fan of wicked happy. The libretto within may not be a complete libretto (excerpts from key scenes such as The Wicked Witch Of The East or the cornfields scene are missing or condensed) but still give a nice flavour of the shows contents.
It is truly an outstanding book, and one which I will recommend to any fan of the musical, however if you have not seen the show then it is probably more advisable to see the show before looking at the book, as spoilers are contained within.

This book is wonderful, not only is it informative but is a lovely book to have. So much thought has been put into this, the presentation is amazing, and with it's beautifully padded cover makes it a joy to hold. It is fantastic, as a member of a musical theatre company myself to see the full process and what is involved in getting a show from pen to stage. I bought this from the theatre when we went to see the show (easily up there as one of my favourites), and I would recommend that you do not delve too deeply into this book if you have not seen the show as it contains LOTS of spoilers.
