1 out of 5 stars Oh Dear...   April 15, 2008

Delia has totally lost the plot and I have lost a lot of respect for her!
I LOVE Delia books, and whilst I am not an amazing or prolific cook - she has taught me lots.
Anyway, this new book is really weird...if I wanted a ready meal I'd buy one. The kind of people that would want to cook this kind of food are more likely to buy a ready meal than bother, we should be teaching people about good, fresh, local ingredients and produce, not encouraging the use of frozen mash!!!!!
Can I get a refund???

My biggest problem with this book is the unabashed consumerism. Pretty much every ingredient has a brand name or a supermarket stockist next to it. Does it really matter where you get your canned tuna, salt or breadcrumbs from? My favourites include the antipasti 'recipe', which is a shopping list of branded meats and olives that you literaly just put together on a plate. The author even admits that "there's no cooking at all". Another one basically involves heating up a jar of premade branded soup.

Several of such shockers apart, if you are prepared to be bombarded with advertisement at every page, this book can prove to be very useful for those short on time and tired of constant take aways. The lunch section is particularly good. Fresh ingredients and slow cooking always taste better, but then not everyone can be a bored housewife.

I highly recommend this book to all those people who work but want to cook tasty meals and not reach for takeaways or ready meals. Delia recommends high quality alternatives, not cheap low qualilty products. She encourages us to use spices and all those lovely things that perhaps some of us didn't know about. My favourite section is Asian Express. Well done Delia, I love this book!

4 out of 5 stars A good book for casual cooks, but not as many cheats as the title suggests   April 11, 2008

I enjoy dabbling in a bit of cooking but I don't want to spend ages reading and re-reading complicated recipes, I just want something I can prepare with the minimum of hassle, but is nicer than something out of a packet. Delia's book has some great cheats in it but I was disappointed that alongside the cheats the ingredients listed are often quite hard to find and require visiting more than one store to get. Surely this defeats the object of writing a cheat book when the time saved is cancelled out by having to hunt around for the all the ingredients, I think there was room to incorporate more cheats but I suppose to keep credibility amongst her peers she had to still include some exotic ingredients. I think she should have ignored the snobs completely and put in as many cheats as possible.

Nevertheless there is a lot to learn from this book if you're a cooking newbie and some of the meals are good fun to make so overall I still think this is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book, but wish it had come out when I was working full time.   April 11, 2008

I learnt to cook through Delia and have all her books. This one I love, but wish she had written it before now. When I was working and living in England this book would have been really useful for me, Instant Cooking.
The recipes as so easy to do, even my friend who hates cooking has taken a few of the recipes.
I now live in France so a lot of the items I can't get but have improvised, I also now I have the time to cook.
I have adapted a few of the recipes to my home made sauce etc.
Just ordered this book for my Daughter who lives in the UK and works full time, This will be great for her, she doesn't have the time to prepare from start but always has a good store cupboard. She will find this book really useful.
The Mediterranean Fish Stew is lovely and tasty and the Lobster & Coconut Soup with Lemongrass & Ginger, to die for, I doubled the quantity the last time I made it! Keep Writing Delia
