Another winner from Delia April 11, 2008 14 out of 19 found this review helpful
I have been a Delia fan for more than 20 years, and have worked my way through almost all of her books. The Complete Cookery Course has been my bible from the day I was married. This new book makes a very welcome addition.
Its not a template for everyday use, just for those days when you are rushed, tired, or haven't had chance to shop. Its not all tinned meat and frozen spuds, there are very many recipes in there using fresh ingredients, with just the addition of a jar of sauce - and how different is that to opening a jar of passata or a tin of tomatoes?
You don't even have to use the ready prepared ingredients, an accomplished and knowledgeable cook, who has the time, could easily substitute a home-made stage. That's exactly what I intend to do on the days I have the time, on the days I don't I won't hesitate to use the convenience food that Delia has suggested. If its good enough for her then its good enough for me!
Ignore all the naysayers in the press - this is a cracking book.
Unbelievable! April 9, 2008 6 out of 39 found this review helpful
Delia's bank balance gets a bit low following her unwise investment in useless Norwich City so she writes this idiotic book and the daft public buy it in droves. What is wrong with people?
Not the Delia we know and Love April 7, 2008 11 out of 30 found this review helpful
Go back to your great style of cooking, Delia and not this high salt content, highly processed way of cooking, use fresh ingredients EVERY time.
Room for both! April 4, 2008 22 out of 28 found this review helpful
I enjoy using our Local to Ludlow market and support local butchers, farm shops and independent fruit and veg shops. I even make my own elderflower cordial, apple juice and gooseberry jam from my garden. BUT I love this book and will also stock many of the items suggested in the freezer. My husband will love using this book, and some of the receipes will be a godsend now that I am teaching my autistic sons to cook and don't fancy letting them use a knife just yet! I am proud to support fresh local food but am equally as relieved to be able to make the lazy summer soup just now and again!
Delia and the 'Real World' April 4, 2008 17 out of 24 found this review helpful
I can see why this book has proved so controversial, with most reviewers awarding it either 1 or 5 stars, with not too many in between.
For me, as a busy middle aged man with an equally busy middle aged wife, neither of whom are naturally gifted cooks, this book is perfect. Whether it's just for the two of us, or when entertaining friends, it is enjoyable to use and produces very successful, if sometimes quite expensive, meals.
OK, so a few aspects may be a bit over the top (e.g.frozen mashed potato?), and I'm a bit concerned over the product placement element (is the decision making re. what products are or are not included really as honourable and above board as is implied?). But some sections are absolutely fantastic (e.g. Asian Express, pronto Italiano).
Thanks again Delia, and I love the accompanying TV series as well.
