5 out of 5 stars Brilliant book and value for money!   March 30, 2007

Amazing book! i bought 'Ernie Balls's' tach yourself guitar for the same price and is nothing compared to this encyclopedia of Guitar! I've only had it a few days, and already i'm amazed by the size (value for money), the simplicity, the amount of stuff it teaches you, and the quality standard of the CD, which features a tuning track, so you can always ensure your guitar is in perfect order. The CD also has about 98 tracks, all incredibly useful, and a mp3 files that works on PC and Mac.

The book includes how to play the guitar, how to buy a good guitar, how to look after your guitar, accessories for your guitar, different styles, and much more!

This is definately worth your money! Buy it NOW!

5 out of 5 stars think your music illiterate?...think again...   January 8, 2007

Having recently bought a guitar having never played one before and did not want tuition, I was looking for a book that I could use to teach myself. This guitar book had excellent reviews and rightly so, after just three days I was strumming simple tunes. It really is a fantastic book. It sets out all the chords and sheet music simply and don't worry if you can't read music because with this book you don't need to. Everything is laid out so beginners can understand straight away and it also has a good amount of humour to go with it aswell. This book is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Beginners   July 9, 2006

What a wonderful book!
This book is very good for people like myself who have absolutely no experience playing guitar. After only a few days with the book I am already playing small tunes and feeling much more confident. It seems everything a beginner might wonder about has been covered, from purchasing a guitar, to the pains in your fingers as you start playing for the first time!

The key, as with all books is to take the time to read it thoroughly and be patient. Everything is explained well and the authors have included several bad jokes and puns along the way which are soo bad you have to laugh. It lightens the mood nicely, as learning to play can get very frustrating at times!!

Also included is an excellent CD so any sample music and practice pieces may be heard as they SHOULD sound. Also, the CD audio files have been split so that guitar only sound is heard on the left channel, whilst any backing music from other instruments is played through the right audio, allowing you to single out the guitar if necessary.

The book focusses on trying to get you to be able to play well as quick as possible - without having to learn musical notation. Learning musical notation can be quite boring, and there is a danger of loosing interest in learning to play. With this book, you don't have to do this (the author says that most guitar players learned to play before learning how to read music - only to learn afterwards as a matter of interest).
Instead a form of music notation called TAB is used, which is the most common guitar music available. It is very easy to understand and this is what the book mainly uses.

Have fun!

4 out of 5 stars Really Good   April 30, 2006

OK, i know im not the worlds greatest guitarist, ive been playing for three years, i never actually taught myself, i just bought artist songbooks and picked up the techniques from them. This book is brilliant for a beginner, everything is in it, even techniques from styles such as rock and folk. The onli problem with this is i think it was written with a person who has no musical knowledge in mind. i suppose thats the point, but if you know musical notation and how a chord is made its quite vague on that area, it tells you chords, but not how the chords are made or why those notes are used.

A good book for anyone, but the flaw is nothing about actual music theory. Still really helpful, dont be put off if u dont read music, but if you want to know stuff like that, its not the best in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Guitar For Dummies   February 17, 2005

I bought the book a couple months ago and it has taught me alot about the guitaring world and is a good introduction to playing guitar.

Firstly the good points, this book is a very good book for someone wanting to start playing guitar, it guides you through all the steps you need to know to give you the push into the world of electric and acoustic guitar. It ranges from stance and posture to bridging the gap between rhythm and lead guitar, etc. Also including is a helpful section on matience of your guitar and buying guide. Furthermore it is broken down into chapters, at the end of most chapters' there is a song that you can play along to using the skills learnt in the chapter, this is a good method of making sure you've learnt something. Also added into the bash is a range of different guitar styles such as blues, rock and folk and even abit of metal. A CD is provided with the book and every piece of music in the book is on the tape, this is very useful to find out how something is played or how it should sound. The pieces of music and explanations in the book are very detailed and the authors make sure you grasp a full understanding of every concept.

However I can find faults with this book, firstly the title is true for the book 'Guitar for DUMMIES' I found that when I bought this book, I already knew and was capable of playing (without reading the chapters) a big chunk of the early book and I had to skip a few chapters. On another note this is a very versatile book but in some places it can be quite vague, for example when I finally reached the part of 'lead guitar' and 'soloing' there were some things that I needed to understand more, it showed me some tricks in solos to make them interesting (bends, slides, etc.) and then gave examples of solos but it didn't go into depth on issues such as 'essentials of soloing' or break down solos to see how you should make them up. This is where the book came down for me. (Adding a minor point the guitarist on the CD obviously had what would be classified as a 'good' guitar and my guitar was more inexpensive like most beginners' will be, I found it hard to get the same tone and sound that the guitarist on the CD was.)

Overall I conclude it is a very good book for a beginner as it covers all areas, some in more depth than others. I wouldn't suggest it for intermidiate and advanced players but for beginners it's the perfect companion.
